HAIRSPRAY director John Waters has a unique theory on America's slipping box office figures - US citizens are staying at home to eat too much.

The film-maker, 59, has been witnessing the dwindling box office figures over the past two years and blames the poor food on offer at cinemas for potential film fans staying at home.

He tells the New York Daily News, "I'd say it's because the American public would rather stay home and eat fattening food.

"And they can't go two hours in a movie theatre without eating. Maybe it's the quality of the food, not the quality of the movies. The movies are good. Maybe if the theatres had more fatty food on hand."
