A stage adaptation of acclaimed novel Water For Elephants is in the works.

Former Disney producer Peter Schneider and his partner Elisabetta di Mambro have acquired the rights to create a theatrical version of author Sarah Gruen's 2006 book, which was adapted for the big screen in 2011 by director Francis Lawrence.

Di Mambro tells The Hollywood Reporter she and Schneider are just beginning the process of talking to potential composers, writers and directors.

Gruen is hoping to collaborate with the producers on the new project, telling the publication, "I am beyond thrilled to be involved in a creative process that is entirely new to me, especially with such wonderfully talented people at the helm to reimagine my work for the stage.

"When I wrote the book, I hoped people would think about the way we treat those who are dependent on us - animals, the elderly, the debilitated, as well as the power of love in all its forms, and it's going to be amazing to see this message delivered in such an exciting medium."
