CBS said today (Monday) that its telecast of Super Bowl XLVII produced the highest overnight ratings in history -- a 48.1 household rating and a 71 share, up from a 47.9/71, scored by the Green Bay/Pittsburgh game carried by Fox in 2011. Last year, initial overnight ratings were down 1 percent from 2011 but final results later put the telecast ahead. In fact, with 111.3 million viewers, the New York Giants/New England Patriots match became the highest-rated telecast in history. So, the question today is whether this year's coverage will emerge as the new champion when final numbers are released -- the sort of question that was tweeted across the Internet after the power outage during Sunday's game when the San Francisco 49ers scored two quick touchdowns after the Baltimore Ravens had taken a commanding lead. (The Ravens managed to hold on to the lead and win the game 34-31.) According to the Nielsen overnight numbers, the game peaked in the 10:30-10:45 p.m. quarter hour with a 52.9 rating and a 75 share. The Baltimore market produced the highest overall ratings nationally with an average 59.6/83. New Orleans, where the game originated, was second with a 57.1/77. Washington D.C., Baltimore's neighbor, was third with a 56.9/80. Somewhat surprisingly, San Francisco, did not make the Nielsen list of the top-ten-rated markets for the game.
