A lawyer for jailed reggae star Vybz Kartel has accused Jamaican officials of spreading false rumours about a violent prison break to prejudice potential jury members in his future murder trial.
The dancehall rapper, real name Adijah Palmer, was taken into custody on a drug charge in September (11) and he was subsequently slapped with two counts of murder relating to two separate incidents in Jamaica over the summer (11).
Reports surfaced online suggesting the 35 year old had broken out of his jail cell on Tuesday (29Nov11) along with seven other inmates after holding guards hostage and stealing their uniforms. The alleged escape was rumoured to have left one prison guard dead and 12 others injured.
But Kartel's lawyer Christian Tavares-Finson reveals the star was actually in court on Tuesday to fight the murder counts, and he's convinced the hoax break-out reports are the work of people trying to make sure the rapper is locked up for crimes his client claims he didn't commit.
Tavares-Finson tells Boomshots.com, "Eventually it will be a jury trial. When one considers the population of Jamaica, you have to realise that it is a small jury pool. Any thought of rumour or any story being carried that is not true will prejudice the jury pool. We have to be very careful.
"At the end of the day, we want him to have a fair trial. It's not about prejudice one way or the other, but about a fail trial. That is what we are seeking as the defence."
But the legal rep insists Kartel is not paying too much attention to the false reports: "He laughed (when he heard the rumour). The sense of humour is still in tact."
And the musician is confident he can beat the murder accusations.
Tavares-Finson adds, "As always, he's in good spirits. He has full confidence in his defence team, which he chose himself. As far as we're concerned, we will make significant progress as time passes. We're confident that, based on what we have seen, it is going to be very difficult for the prosecution to continue bringing cases against him."
He'll also be on board as a producer for the book to screen adaptation.
Gendry has been living under Cersei Lannister's nose for quite some time now.
The director would love to take the films in a different direction.
