eports that a former Italian priest has given police the names of nine priests who operated a rent boy ring at the Vatican began circulating on numerous gossip websites over the weekend but were virtually ignored by mainstream broadcast and cable news outlets. The former priest, Don Patrizio Poggi, had served a five-year sentence for abusing five teenaged boys at his parish. Reports said that a senior Vatican official, Cardinal Agostino Vallini, head of the Catholic Vicariate of Rome, had accused Poggi of seeking revenge after the church refused to reinstate him and called his accusations slander, a reason, perhaps, why some mainstream news outlets have been reluctant to repeat the accusations. But the London Sunday Times reported that Poggi's claims gained some credibility from the fact that he was accompanied by Monsignor Luca Lorusso, an adviser to the Papal Nuncio to Italy, who is himself a confidante of Pope Francis.
