A Tribe Called Quest Dj Ali Shaheed Muhammad celebrated the release of a new documentary about his band on Friday (08Jul11) by inviting fans in New York to join him for a free late night screening.
Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest, directed by actor-turned-filmmaker Michael Rapaport, tells the story of the band's rise to fame and details their split in 1998 and their subsequent reunions.
It was released in select cinemas across the U.S. on Friday and Muhammad organised a last-minute fan giveaway via Twitter.com to mark the event.
He bought 20 tickets to the last screening of the day at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema in lower Manhattan and offered them up to devotees on a first come, first served basis.
In a post on his blog, he wrote, "Reserved Seats for my peeps. First 20 fans get in on me 1st 5 get popcorn on @sunshine_cinema see u @ 11."
Muhammad was swamped by fans as he arrived at the venue to personally hand out the tickets, which he'd autographed, and posed for photos before heading into the theatre to watch the documentary with members of the public.
The film is part of a new DLF project, 'Playing Lynch'.
