The Hunger Games: Catching Fire crushed its competitors to emerge triumphant at the U.K. box office in its opening weekend.
The action sequel, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth, took $18.3 million (£12.2 million) over the weekend (22-24Nov13) to land the U.K. number one spot.
Outer space drama Gravity was brought back down to earth after two weeks at the top, slipping to second place taking $3.6 million (£2.4 million) across the weekend, while Doctor Who's 50th anniversary episode, Doctor Who: The Day Of The Doctor, claimed third place with $2.7 million (£1.8 million). The British Tv special became a one-off cinema release as it was beamed into theatres around the world on Saturday night (23Nov13).
Superhero blockbuster Thor: The Dark World dropped two places to fourth, taking $1.1 million (£722,811), while The Butler was a non-mover in fifth making $920,816 (£613,877).
