The frontman of the Georgia-based indie rock band passed away after battling an unknown illness, according to Spin magazine.

With The Glands, Shapiro released two albums, 1997's Double Thriller and 2000's The Glands, but following the release of their second album, they embarked on an indefinite hiatus.

In 2014, Shapiro, who also owned a now-closed local record shop in Athens, Georgia, revealed they had reunited to create new music, in addition to playing shows in their home state.
