Lewis, most famous for playing grumpy ticket inspector Cyril 'Blakey' Blake in classic TV sitcom On the Buses, died on 12 August (15) at a nursing home in Wanstead, east London, aged 88.

More than a hundred mourners turned out in Wanstead to say farewell to the beloved actor, including his On the Buses co-star Anna Karen, who says, "He'll be very sadly missed. He was an extremely talented and very funny man and wonderful to work with."

One mourner left a floral tribute in the form of a red double-decker London bus near Our Lady of the Lourdes Church, where the service took place. Lewis was later buried near the nursing home.
