Acclaimed Hollywood visual effects guru Joe Viskocil has died, aged 63.
The Oscar winner passed away on Monday (11Aug14) in a Los Angeles hospital after suffering to complications linked to liver and kidney failure.
Viskocil's credits include a number of blockbuster action films, including the first two Star Wars films, Star Wars and Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back.
He also worked on Ghostbusters, The Return of the Living Dead, Batman Returns, Alien: Resurrection, True Lies, Battlefield Earth, Armageddon, Godzilla, Star Trek: Nemesis and the first two Terminator films.
In 1996, he was among the visual effects experts who picked up an Oscar for sci-fi disaster film Independence Day.
His final movie, The Prey starring Danny Trejo, is set to hit cinemas in October (14).
The film is almost half an hour longer than 'The Force Awakens'.
The film is expected to continue without Mendes' involvement.
