The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water has knocked American Sniper off the top of the North American box office chart with an impressive $56 million (£35 million) debut.

The family movie, a mix of live action and animation and starring Antonio Banderas, easily toppled Clint Eastwood's acclaimed war film, which still generated strong sales with takings of $24.2 million (£15.1 million).

The drama, about late U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, now boasts over $282 million (£176.3 million) from the North American market alone, making it the third-highest grossing 2014 release behind The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Sci-fi adventure Jupiter Ascending, starring Channing Tatum and new mum Mila Kunis, disappoints at three with $19 million (£11.9 million), followed by Jeff Bridges fantasy Seventh Son at four with a poor $7.1 million (£4.4 million).

Paddington rounds out the new top five at five.
