Four Spanish TV executives have been jailed after scamming viewers out of money in a bogus phone-in quiz.

Viewers phoned in their droves when they heard about the competition on local Madrid TV network TELESIERRA - and they paid the equivalent of $1.04-per-minute (GBP0.74) to answer simple questions for 30 minutes.

After that, their calls were simply terminated.

The swindle generated an estimated $6.5 million (GBP3.4 million) until Madrid authorities were notified.

Police halted the show last week and arrested the four executives, who were jailed on fraud charges last Friday (04MAR05).
