Famed Spanish pianist ALICIA DE LARROCHA has died at the age of 86.
The musician passed away in Quiron Hospital in Barcelona, Spain on Friday (25Sep09). Her health had deteriorated since she broke her hip two years ago, according to record producer Gregor Benko, a family friend.
De Larrocha began taking piano lessons when she was just three, before making her debut at five at the International Exposition in Barcelona.
She went on to travel the world playing with major orchestras and winning several Grammy awards for her recordings.
Spain's Culture Minister Angeles Gonzalez-Sinde says, "She was an extraordinary ambassador for Spain."
Members of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra paid tribute to De Larrocha by holding a minute's silence before performing in her honour last weekend (26-27Sep09).
