Accomplished soul composer NORMAN WHITFIELD has pleaded guilty to failing to pay income tax on more than $2 million (GBP1.1 million) in royalties he has been paid.

The 64-year-old co-wrote classic songs including I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE and PAPA WAS A ROLLING STONE during his 1960s heyday.

Whitfield entered his plea on Tuesday (11JAN05) and INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE (IRS) spokesperson GARY TANG announced on Wednesday (12JAN05) that he had made a deal which requires him to complete delinquent tax returns.

Whitfield admitted failing to declare earnings on about $600,000 ($333,000) per year between 1995 and 1999, costing the IRS $955,000 (GBP536,000) in lost revenue.
