Songwriter George Green has lost his battle with lung cancer at the age of 59.
He died in Albuquerque, New Mexico last month (28Aug11), according to trade publication Variety.
Green, who was a childhood friend of rocker John Mellencamp, reunited with the Grammy winner and co-write lyrics for some of the singer's biggest hits, including Hurts So Good, Crumblin' Down and Rain On The Scarecrow.
The songwriter also penned tunes for Hall & Oates, Ricky Skaggs and Vanessa Williams, as well as the title track Higher Ground for Barbara Streisand's 1997 album.
