Sir David Jason plans to "hang up his coat and scarf" and will no longer play DI Jack Frost, he has announced.
The actor, famed for his roles in Open All Hours and Only Fools and Horses, has played the detective on ITV1 for some 16 years.
But speaking at a London press conference, the 68-year-old said the cantankerous character was now "a little too long in the tooth".
"It's time to move on," he explained.
"You wouldn't want me to play Frost in a wheelchair, would you? It's a sad day for us all.
"One doesn't want to go on and on - you don't want to outlive your welcome."
Sir David has starred in more than 40 episodes concerning Det Insp Jack Frost and will feature in three new episodes this autumn before a two-part finale is screened in 2009.
The actor was recently announced as the voiceover replacement for Irish actress Dervla Kirwan for Marks and Spencer's food advertising campaign.
The actor says he isn't "holding out for more money or doing anything like that".
The drama will be making its return to the streaming service in the near future.
