South African jazz musician SIPHO GUMEDE died from an undisclosed illness yesterday (26JUL04). He was 52.

Gumede, who was internationally acclaimed for fusing jazz with traditional African rhythms, passed away in Durban.

Record label SHEER SOUND's DON KHAILE says, "Sipho was one of the most respected bass guitarist in South Africa. He was one of those rare, rare musicians. He would play from jazz, classics, whatever genre."
