Bird-based kids cartoon Rio 2 has flown to the top of the U.K. box office chart on its opening weekend (04-06Apr14).

The animated sequel, featuring the voices of Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway and telling the tale of a family of blue macaws on an adventure in the Amazon rainforest, took $4.4 million (£2.8 million) in ticket sales.

It left the previous chart-topper, superhero movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier, trailing in its wake with takings of $4.3 million (£2.7 million).

Biblical epic Noah debuted in third place, with $4 million (£2.5 million), and the top five was rounded out by Divergent ($2.7 million/£1.7 million) and Muppets Most Wanted ($1.4 million/£897,000).
