A British reggae festival has been cancelled after complaints about performers' homophobic lyrics.

Acts SIZZLA and VYBZ KARTEL were scheduled to perform at REGGAE IN THE PARK this weekend (4-5SEP04).

Organisers were last week (ends27AUG04) forced to move the bash from London's Victoria Park to Wembley Arena - but have now pulled the plug, complaining "negative publicity" meant they couldn't find a suitable home.

The festival has been subject to controversy since gay pressure groups complained about anti-gay lyrics, particularly after British police began an investigation into alleged homophobic content in dancehall artist Beenie Man's songs.

A statement from the festival organisers reads, "Due to the recent negative publicity surrounding reggae music in the UK press, no alternative suitable venue could be found that was willing to take on the perceived security risk represented by Reggae In The Park.

"Therefore it is with sadness that the organisers have had to announce the cancellation of this event. The organisers plan to bring Reggae In The Park to London in 2005."
