A judge on Canadian reality series HOW DO YOU SOLVE A PROBLEM LIKE MARIA? has been charged with assault and forcible confinement - just hours before the show announced a winner.
Simon Lee, 46, was arrested in the early hours of Sunday (27Jul08) at Hazelton Hotel in Yorkville, Toronto after a man in his 20s was reportedly assaulted in a room and held against his will.
Police constable Tony Vella says, "The allegations are he (the victim) was assaulted in the hotel room and he tried to flee the hotel room, but the accused obstructed (his attempt to escape)."
Lee appeared in court on Monday (28Jul08) and was released on $9,775 (GBP4,887) bail. He has another court appearance scheduled for 27 August (08).
CBC-TV network producers claimed "personal reasons" prevented Lee from attending the final two episodes of the show on Sunday and Monday, when 23-year-old Elicia MACKenzie was cast as Maria von Trapp in a Toronto production of The Sound Of Music.
Theatre impresario and series creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber personally selected Lee, a conductor, to appear on the TV competition.
Many ticket-holders couldn't get into the O2 Arena show on Tuesday night (September 19th) because they didn't bring photo ID to match their booking.
An album re-release, a new song and a documentary mark the singer's legacy this year.
The actor plays the titular hero in the forthcoming adaptation.
