Embattled Paralympian Oscar Pistorius is ready to begin his defence in his ongoing murder trial after prosecutors rested their case against the sportsman on Tuesday (25Mar14).
The athlete stands accused of intentionally killing his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, by shooting her in the bathroom of his South African home on Valentine's Day last year (14Feb13). Pistorius maintains he mistook the leggy beauty for an intruder.
During the first three weeks of the trial, the double amputee was forced to listen to prosecutors as they revealed gruesome details about Steenkamp's injuries, which prompted him to vomit repeatedly in court.
On Monday (24Mar14), the Johannesburg court heard evidence from police captain Francois Moller, who read out a handful of text messages sent by the blonde model to her beau weeks before her death, revealing that she had been "scared" of his short temper.
Moller also shared several romantic exchanges between the couple and admitted that 90 per cent of the more than 1,000 texts recovered from their phones were normal and "loving" exchanges.
Authorities wrapped up their arguments against Pistorius on Tuesday (25Mar14), handing the case to his defence team, which will begin to fight the allegations when court resumes on Friday (28Mar14).
Speaking after Tuesday's hearing, Pistorius briefly told reporters, "It's a tough time. We've got a lot ahead of us."
Pistorius' lawyers had asked for an adjournment to allow them time to consult with witnesses who had not been called by the state.
The sportsman is expected to take the witness stand in the coming days.
