"The movie has given the book a whole new life," she said. (It is currently listed at No. 1 on the New York Times 's Paperback Trade Fiction list. USA Today lists it at No. 13 overall.) Sapphire told the newspaper that the book has now reached readers beyond its original "comfort zone, beyond the artists and intellectuals and black teens and social workers.
