Police in Vienna, Austria have launched an investigation after a theatre actor accidentally cut his throat with a real knife during a play.
Daniel Hoevels was supposed to use a prop blade for his character's suicide scene in drama Mary Stuart, but the fake dagger was replaced with the genuine article.
And when he stabbed himself in the neck during a performance on Saturday night (06Dec08), blood gushed all over the stage.
Police authorities fear the knife was replaced and left to cause damage, while the theatre company bosses insist the prop version was damaged and that instructions to blunt the replacement had been "carelessly" disregarded.
Hoevels received stitches for his injury and has returned to the cast.
He'll be performing a new residency at an intimate theatre.
