Emmy Award-winning U.S. newsreader ALYCIA LANE has been arrested after punching a police officer in New York. The 35-year-old presenter of Philadelphia's KYW-TV nightly news jumped out of a cab and confronted two plain-clothed cops who were driving slowly ahead of her at 2am on Sunday (16Dec07), according to New York Daily News. Police sources claim Lane was arrested when she struck a female officer in the face, drawing blood. She was charged with assaulting a police officer, to which she pleaded not guilty; and was released without bail to appear in court on 3 April (08). But Lane's lawyer insists the star had no idea she was dealing with police officers - and was not the aggressor. David Smith tells the Daily News, "She absolutely didn't hit or make derogatory remarks to anyone. She was inside the taxi when the initial confrontation was going on." He adds that she only left the cab to take a photograph and "her camera was violently grabbed from her. She was shocked to learn after the fact that these people were plain-clothed police officers." Lane hit headlines in May (07) when she emailed saucy photographs of herself to a married colleague.
