Netflix, which has indicated it would like to phase out its video-by-mail operation and become an all-streaming rental company, has noted on the envelopes in which it mails discs to subscribers that it has shipped more than 4 billion discs since it launched in 1999. Home Media magazine, which noted that Netflix had made no additional mention of the milestone, observed that when the company hit previous billion-rental milestones, it heralded the achievement with a news release or at least a blog post. In the meantime, Netflix has suffered numerous setbacks that have impacted its shares. Home Media senior editor Erik Gruenwedel commented: The mailers would appear to mark another step in what Hastings recently characterized is Netflix's ongoing three-year probation period to bring back subscriber and investor confidence from the summer of '11.
There's already an Oscars buzz surrounding this movie.
