U.S. racing driver Jason Leffler has died after a car crash at the Bridgeport Speedway in New Jersey.
The 37-year-old Nascar star was taking part in the Night of Wings event, during which drivers race on dirt tracks, when he lost control of his high-powered vehicle on Wednesday (12Jun13). He was airlifted off the track but died from his injuries hours later.
Paying tribute to Leffler following the tragic news of his death, Nascar officials released a statement, which reads: "Nascar extends its thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies to the family of Jason Leffler who passed away earlier this evening. For more than a decade, Jason was a fierce competitor in our sport and he will be missed."
Top driver Kyle Busch sent his sympathies in a tweet, writing, "Deeply saddened by the passing of @JasonLeffler tonight. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers."
Many ticket-holders couldn't get into the O2 Arena show on Tuesday night (September 19th) because they didn't bring photo ID to match their booking.
An album re-release, a new song and a documentary mark the singer's legacy this year.
The actor plays the titular hero in the forthcoming adaptation.
