Baseball commissioner Bud Selig has rejected a deal between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Fox TV because most of the Fox money would have been earmarked to pay for the settlement of a divorce by the team's owners, Frank McCourt and his ex-wife Jamie, and to pay off their lawyers. In a statement, Selig condemned what he called a "further diversion of Dodgers assets for the personal needs of Mr. McCourt" that would "have the effect of mortgaging the future of the franchise." Selig's ruling once again raises questions about whether McCourt will be able to meet the team's payroll on June 30. A spokesperson for McCourt said Monday that Selig's decision is "not only a disappointment, but worse, is potentially destructive to the Los Angeles Dodgers and Major League Baseball. ... We plan to explore vigorously our options and remedies."
