British singer/rapper M.I.A. has confirmed she's pregnant with her first child.
The star, real name Mathangi Arulpragasam, sparked rumours she is expecting a baby after appearing at a New York gig on Saturday night (11Oct08) with a bulging belly.
Following her set, she told Pitchfork Media, "I'm creating a baby."
But M.I.A. - who is set to marry The Exit singer/guitarist Benjamin Brewer - insists her plans for marriage came before she discovered she was having a child.
She adds, "I got engaged first, then I got pregnant, kids."
And the 31-year-old admits her baby news coincided with her single Paper Planes doing well in the charts.
She says, "When I found out I was pregnant and Paper Planes was in the iTunes top 10, it seemed like the whole world was reshuffled in one week, and all my plans went out the window.
"I've got two kids, that's what it feels like. And that's the lesson - you can't make plans."
The star is currently working on a follow-up to her latest album Kala - but insists she has to attend to some family business first: "I have to do the rounds - go see my family and show them the belly."
