A popular Malaysian rock singer has apologised for offending Muslims in his native land by baring his chest during a live TV concert. Faizal Tahir has offered to do community service to make up for the stunt which saw him take off his jacket, shirt and belt at a Kuala Lumpur concert on Sunday (13Jan08). National television network 8TV said it was "utterly shocked and caught by surprise" by the act. The 29-year-old says he is "truly sorry". He adds, "I did not realise it would be an insult to many. I now realise that taking off one's shirt is a big no." Tahir will face six months probation at 8TV, during which he cannot appear on the network's shows. He also must take part in 8TV community projects, such as working at an orphanage or retirement home.
Many ticket-holders couldn't get into the O2 Arena show on Tuesday night (September 19th) because they didn't bring photo ID to match their booking.
An album re-release, a new song and a documentary mark the singer's legacy this year.
The actor plays the titular hero in the forthcoming adaptation.
