The Lego Movie is building on its success in the U.S. by soaring to the top of the U.K. box office chart in its opening weekend (14-16Feb14).

The animated comedy, featuring the voices of Will Arnett and Elizabeth Banks, took a massive $13.4 million (£8.3 million) in ticket sales, dwarfing its nearest rival The Monuments Men, which managed just $2.7 million (£1.6 million) in its first three days.

The remake of classic sci-fi movie Robocop dropped one place to third, with $2.5 million (£1.56 million), and last week's chart-topper Mr. Peabody & Sherman sunk three places to fourth, with $2.3 million (£1.4 million).

The top five was rounded out by Martin Scorsese's crime drama The Wolf of Wall Street, with weekend takings of $1.8 million (£1.1 million).
