STEPHANE LISSNER has been named as the new artistic director of Milan, Italy's La Scala opera house - replacing previous post-holder RICCARDO MUTI
Muti quit his prestigious job on 2 April, citing "hostility" from staff since he sacked senior La Scala official CARLO FONTANA in February (05) as the reason for his departure - and he was followed by president FEDELE CONFALONIERI on 11 April, who gave no reason for his resignation.
Lissner worked at Paris, France's Theatre De La Madeleine before his appointment yesterday (21APR05) - and he promises to concentrate solely on music after signing a four-and-a-half year contract.
Giancarlo Albori, a spokesman for La Scala's workers union, adds, "We believe this is the opening of a new chapter."22/04/2005 17:09
