Screen star NICOLE KIDMAN surprised audience members at London's DONMAR WAREHOUSE by laughing uproariously during a performance of CAMUS' tragedy CALIGULA.

The DOGVILLE actress wowed audiences in 1998 with her turn in THE BLUE ROOM at the theatre, and patrons were happy to see the OSCAR-winner back at the venue earlier this week (begs02JUN03).

However, Kidman's constant giggling during the performance shocked her fellow theatre goers.

A source tells British newspaper THE DAILY TELEGRAPH, "Most people were rather surprised by her response to the performance. Even though the play is very heavy, Nicole was frequently overheard laughing loudly."

Welsh actor Michael Sheen, who plays the title role, says, "I was surprised and a bit worried at the amount of laughter I heard. But maybe that is a reflection of he audience than the play. I don't think Camus intended it to be funny. After all, it is a tragedy."
