Joseph Altuzarra won the Womenswear Designer of the Year award at the CFDA Fashion Awards last night (02.06.14).

The 30-year-old designer was presented with the prize for his eponymous, self-named brand Altuzarra at the Council of Fashion Designers of America annual awards ceremony held at the Lincoln Center in New York, beating fierce competitors including Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang.

Previous title holders include Proenza Schouler, who has been presented with the award three times in the past, Marc Jacobs, Oscar De La Renta and Tom Ford, whose designs Altuzarra's are often likened to.

Other big winners on the night included Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who were handed the Accessories Designer of the Year prize for their high-end label The Row.

Public School's Dao Yi-Chow and Maxwell Osborne picked up the Menswear Designer of the Year Award, while Tom Ford was honoured with the prestigious Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement award, which was presented to him by his husband, fashion journalist Richard Buckley.

During his acceptance speech, Ford said: ''It's been a wonderful 25 years and I could have never achieved it without all the people in this room.''

Rihanna - who opted for a daring see-through gown at the ceremony - took home the Fashion Icon of the Year award, following in the footsteps of Lady GaGa, Kate Moss and Johnny Depp.
