Jazz drummer Robert French, Sr. has died, aged 74.

The former Original Tuxedo Jazz Band leader died on Monday (12Nov12) after a lengthy battle with dementia and diabetes.

French was the son of revered banjo player Albert 'Papa' French, who originally led the Original Tuxedo Jazz Band.

The drummer was also a controversial radio Dj for New Orleans, Louisiana jazz station Wwoz Fm. He made a name for himself on air in the wake of Hurricane Katrina by listing elected officials he believed had failed the city.
