Italian composer and pianist Giorgio Gaslini has died, aged 84.
Gaslini died on Tuesday (29Jul14) at a hospital in Parma, Italy, where he had been staying following a fall last month (Jun14).
He is best known for composing the soundtrack to Italian drama La Notte in 1961 and the 1975 horror Deep Red.
Gaslini, considered one of the most original musicians on the European jazz scene, helped popularise Afro-American music in his native country and gave jazz lessons.
Throughout his career, he performed more than 4,000 times in 60 countries, produced approximately 100 jazz and contemporary music records, and composed more than 40 film soundtracks.
In 2002, he received a gold medal from Italy's then-President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi in recognition of his achievements in art and culture.
