IRON MAN 2 has overcome rival blockbusters - and the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland - to top the U.K. box office chart.
The London premiere of the action sequel was cancelled when European flights were grounded amid safety fears last month (Apr10) - but the absence of a glitzy unveiling has not affected its performance at British cinemas.
The movie, starring Robert Downey, Jr., has soared straight to the top of the box office chart, pulling in $11.4 million (£7.6 million) on the first weekend of its release.
Family movie How To Train Your Dragon moves up one place into second, with $1.3 million (£844,000), while last week's number one, Date Night, slips to third with $1.2 million (£783,000).
The top five is rounded out by Miley Cyrus' new release The Last Song, which took $1 million (£678,000), and Clash of the Titans, which falls from second to fifth place, with $988,000 (£659,000).
The actor says he isn't "holding out for more money or doing anything like that".
