Sci-fi thriller Interstellar soared ahead of its rivals to claim top spot at the U.K. box office on its opening weekend (07-09Nov14).

The intergalactic blockbuster, which stars Matthew MCConaughey as an astronaut on a mission to save Earth, took almost $8.6 million (£5.4 million) in ticket sales, easily outstripping its rivals.

Mr. Turner, director Mike Leigh's biopic of artist J.M.W. Turner, rose five places to claim second spot, with $1.6 million (£1 million) in sales, after a disappointing first week run.

Last weekend's (31Oct-02Nov14) chart-topper, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, fell to third place, with box office receipts of $1.2 million (£739,000), and the top five was rounded out by Gone Girl ($1.1 million/£700,000) and Fury ($1 million/£674,000).
