Hazarika was known as the Bard of Brahmaputra, named after the river in the state where he grew up, and he was best known for his ballads.
He also wrote music for hundreds of films throughout his lengthy career and in 2002, he was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India's most coveted cinematic prize, for his lifetime contribution to movie scores.
He'll also be on board as a producer for the book to screen adaptation.
