Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is undergoing further cancer treatment in Cuba.
The controversial leader, who was diagnosed with the deadly disease last year (11), underwent surgery in June (11) to remove a baseball-sized tumour in his pelvic region. He was later given a bill of good health after four rounds of chemotherapy proved successful.
However, last month (Feb12) medics discovered a second malignant lesion during a routine check-up and he was forced to undergo another operation. The politician arrived in Havana late on Saturday (24Mar12) to complete the first of five radiation therapy sessions, but Chavez hopes to be back home as early as Thursday (29Mar12).
Speaking by phone with a Venezuelan news channel, he said, "In reality, part of the treatment is prayer, faith... It's part of my job to assume with rigour this task of fighting to overcome the difficulties, and to continue living."
