American Hindu officials are upset with TV bosses after one of their gods was portrayed as a villain in a recent episode of The Flash.
The religious leaders were appalled when the deity Savitr popped up as a "frightening" bad guy on the hit action series, and now statesman Rajan Zed has called on show executives to apologise for hurting the feelings of "devotees".
"It was upsetting for the Hindu community when they learned of their deity's name linked to a frightening villain," Zed, the President of the Universal Society of Hinduism, says, urging CW network bosses not to link the god's name with a villain in future episodes.
"Hindu deities are meant to be worshipped in temples and home shrines and not to be thrown around loosely or dragged around unnecessarily for mercantile greed," he added.
"Entertainment executives should be more sensitive while handling faith related subjects."
Savitr is the name of the sun god, who exists in Rig-Veda, the oldest existing scripture known to mankind. Savitr made his debut in episode six of the current season on the show, which aired in America on 15 November (16).
