Writer/composer David K. Israel is adapting a feature film from author Elizabeth Kendall's 2013 book Balanchine and the Lost Muse: Revolution and the Making of a Choreographer.

The biography centres on Balanchine's early years when he was abandoned by his mother at the St. Petersburg Imperial Ballet Academy in 1913 at the age of nine, as well as his eventual escape from his native Russia in 1924.

Balanchine went on to become one of the 20th century's most prolific choreographers and co-founded the School of American Ballet and New York City Ballet.
