Hip-hop legend DJ KOOL HERC will undergo surgery to remove painful kidney stones after fans and peers joined forces to raise much-needed funds to cover his medical bills.
The rap pioneer was discharged from a hospital in New York last week (ends30Jan11) after the pain from the ailment became too much to bear.
Doctors warned the 55 year old he required surgery, which he was forced to decline because he couldn't afford the required medical insurance.
Friends of Kool Herc, real name Clive Campbell, clubbed together to urge devotees to donate money to help the icon out, with star pals including Sean 'Diddy' Combs and DJ Premier calling on their fans to get involved.
Donations began pouring in via a custom-made website and, by Tuesday morning (01Feb11) - 24 hours after news of Kool Herc's health crisis hit the headlines - it emerged the drive had been a huge success.
A message posted by the webmaster of DJ Premier's site reads: "Just got the word from DJ Premier that I can take down the donations address and his bills are getting handled. More details remain unknown. Hopefully we can hear an official text by Kool Herc himself as soon as possible. I guess he had a lot of donations from all around us."
The live album is set for released in November.
