The 74-year-old musician and celebrated protest singer was shot dead in 2011 when his vehicle came under fire as he was travelling between his concert and the airport in Guatemala. The driver, his music promoter Henry Farinas, was also injured in the attack.

On Thursday (07Apr16), Judge Yassmin Barrios in Guatemala sentenced a Costa Rican man and two Guatemalan men to 30 years in prison for the murder of Cabral and 20 further years for the attempted murder of Farinas.

Two other Guatemalan men were given the same 50 year term, plus an additional three years for trying to conceal the crime.

During the trial, the court heard that the Costa Rican had hired the others to kill Farinas, the real target of the attack. In 2012, Farinas was sentenced to 30 years in prison for money laundering.
