Director Zachary Shedd has appealed to independent film fans to help fund his forthcoming movie by launching a crowdfunding campaign online.

The filmmaker is seeking $25,000 (£14,706) to put towards costs for Americana, about an alcoholic movie editor who tries to get to the bottom of his actress sister's murder after she is shot and killed outside a party for their new project.

Shedd has recruited Gossip Girl actor David Call and House of Cards star Rachel Brosnahan to lead the cast, but he is seeking financial backing from devotees to help him reach his funding goal.

The campaign had raised just over $17,000 (£10,000) as Wenn went to press, with nine days left to hit its target.

Shedd isn't the first filmmaker to turn to crowdfunding to finance a movie - Zach Braff, Simon West and Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas have all recently turned to the public for help to make their big screen dreams a reality.
