Fifty Shades Of Grey has broken U.K. box office records by taking $21.6 million (£13.5 million) during its first few days in cinemas, making it the nation's biggest ever Valentine's weekend (13-15Feb15) release.

The erotic thriller, starring Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, shot straight to the top of the U.K. box office chart and has taken more money than the rest of the top 10 chart combined.

The $21.6 million total gives the big screen adaptation of E.L. James' book the nation's largest ever opening for an 18-rated movie and for a non-franchise/sequel film, while it is also the highest-grossing release for February and the biggest Valentine's Day opening. It is also the best-selling movie of the year (15) in Britain so far.

The film also broke Valentine's Day opening records in the U.S. with takings of $81.7 million (£51 million) over the weekend while it became the highest-grossing R-rated film in the Philippines and Australia on opening day.
