New Zealand-based author Eleanor Catton has become the youngest winner of the Man Booker Prize.

The 28-year-old's second novel The Luminaries won her the prestigious literary award on Tuesday night (15Oct13).

At 832 pages, her book is also the longest to win the $75,000 (£50,000) prize.

Canadian by birth, Catton was a surprise winner - she beat bookmakers' favourite Jim Crace, whose latest novel Harvest will be his last.
