A DVD release party at an Egyptian church on Friday (21OCT05) turned into a deadly riot when local Muslims took offence to the theme of the film.

Police were called when irate Muslims pelted Christians leaving the St George Church - a famous Coptic landmark in Alexandria - after learning about the theme of the movie they had in their hands.

Based on a play that debuted in the church in 2003, the film, I WAS BLIND BUT NOW I CAN SEE, follows the tale of a Christian who became Muslim, only to question the religion.

The DVD was distributed to church members as they attended a service.

Three of the protesters were killed when the Muslims rushed the church and had to be kept at bay by police firing rubber bullets and tear gas.
