Sci-fi blockbuster Divergent has shot to the top of the North American box office with a $56 million (£35 million) opening.
The movie adaptation of Veronica Roth's dystopian novel, which stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James, scored the second biggest opening of the year, behind The Lego Movie's $69 million (£43.1 million) in February (14).
Disney family movie The Muppets Most Wanted debuted in second place with $16.5 million (£10.3 million) and Mr. Peabody & Sherman fell to third with $11.7 million (£7.3 million).
Rounding out the top five were 300: Rise of an Empire with $8.7 million (£5.4 million) and faith-based movie God's Not Dead earning $8.6 million (£5.3 million).
