DEADLIEST CATCH star CAPTAIN PHIL HARRIS has died two weeks after suffering a stroke. He was 53.
The deep-sea fisherman was one of the stars of the popular Discovery Channel reality show about the fishing industry in the dangerous waters off Alaska.
He suffered a stroke on 29 January (10) and was airlifted to hospital in Anchorage where he underwent 12 hours of surgery, before being placed in a medically induced coma. He regained consciousness last week (beg01Feb10), but succumbed to his condition on Tuesday night (09Feb10).
A statement from Discovery Channel bosses reads: "Discovery mourns the loss of dear friend and colleague Captain Phil Harris. He was more than someone on our television screen. Phil was a devoted father and loyal friend to all who knew him. We will miss his straightforward honesty, wicked sense of humour and enormous heart. We share our tremendous sadness over this loss with the millions of viewers who followed Phil's every move. We send our thoughts and prayers to Phil's sons and the Cornelia Marie (ship's) crew."
Harris is survived by his sons Jake and Josh.
