Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes has climbed its way to the top of the North American box office with a $73 million (£43 million) debut this weekend (11-13Jul14).

The sequel to 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, starring Gary Oldman, Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke and Keri Russell, bested last week's number one, Transformers: Age of Extinction, which earned $16.5 million (£9.7 million) in its second week of release.

Melissa MCCarthy's comedy Tammy placed third with $12.9 million (£7.6 million), while 22 Jump Street took the fourth spot, earning $6.7 million (£3.9 million).

Rounding out the top five is How to Train Your Dragon 2 with $5.9 million (£3.5 million).
